Athens is nothing if not sunny. Clocking in at just over 300 days of sun per year, you’d be hard pressed to find many other European capitals that wield such tremendous solar pedigree. They say that ‘the sun is for everyone, but the beaches are for those who deserve it’. Well, here in Athens, deserve it you will, and how! Given that Athens is essentially a coastal city, you would be correct in assuming that beaches abound, and not just in the southern suburbs, aka Miami-on-the-Med. So, if you’re heading over to Athens this summer,  hop aboard on a journey with me as we unveil the top five beaches in Athens, each offering a unique blend of natural beauty and vibrant atmosphere.

Astir beach: Glitz and Glamour

Astir beach is posh. There’s no other way to put it. It’s been that way since the likes of Onassis and his amazing friends staked a claim to it as their private playground in the 1950’s. This has continued to this day, with the small strip of land that makes up this enclave in Vouliagmeni an exclusive haunt for the well heeled. At Astir you’ll find cabanas, villas and a marina, as well as the usual assortment of sunbeds and loungers, while a spa offers wellness treatments, too. This is without doubt the most glitzy beach in the Athenian Riviera, and even though it comes with the obligatory hefty price tag, don’t let that discourage you from entering a world of mythical allure and terrific vibes. This is one of the best beaches in Athens, if you’re partial to pampering.

Limanakia: Freedom & Fun For the Young

Some of the best beaches in Athens are sandy, and its not hard to see why. But, think outside the box for a minute, and allow us to introduce Limanakia. Limanakia is a  rocky outcrop with a small cove where the only sand you’ll find is at the bottom of the sea. This protected bay is ideal for people who want to rock dive into the azure waters of the Aegean, while the LGTBQ  community is said to favour this enclave. You’ll find a small beach bar perched on its slope, with loud music and a few loungers on a plateau. This spot has no entrance fee, but make sure you get there early as prime rock spots get snapped up quickly

Kavouri: An All-Around Best Seller

Made up of ‘Mikro’ & “Megalo’ Kavouri – two disticnt beaches next to each other, the scenic Kavouri beach is your go-to spot for an easy day at the beach, with no fuss. This is your typical Greek beach, with nice fluffy yellow sand, loungers and sunbeds and a few eateries and cafes lining its shore. Mikro Kavouri has an expansive beach with shallow waters, ideal for kids, while the Megalo Kavouri has more amenities and a killer view, curtesy of its location.

Varkiza Beach: A Family-Friendly Haven

Situated just a stone’s throw away from Athens city center, Varkiza Beach offers a welcome escape for families seeking sun, sand, and sea. Boasting shallow, calm waters and a wide stretch of sandy shoreline, this coastal gem is ideal for little ones to splash and play to their heart’s content. Parents can unwind on sun loungers shaded by colorful umbrellas, while lifeguards keep a watchful eye over the swimmers. Pack a picnic and make use of the designated barbecue areas, or sample fresh seafood at one of the beachfront tavernas serving up traditional Greek fare. With playgrounds, volleyball courts, and water sports facilities on offer, there’s no shortage of activities to keep the whole family entertained.

Schinias Beach: A Surfer’s Paradise

One of the best beaches in Athens for water sports enthusiasts, Schinias Beach promises thrills aplenty against a backdrop of rugged natural beauty. This windswept stretch of coastline is known for its consistent winds and excellent conditions for windsurfing and kiteboarding, so go ahead and test your skills on the waves or simply bask in the laid-back atmosphere, as beachgoers gather to soak up the sun and admire the panoramic views of the surrounding pine forest. Nature lovers will delight in the nearby Schinias National Park, home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, including rare bird species and protected marine habitats.

Athens offers a beach experience to suit every taste, from glamorous seaside retreats to secluded natural oases. Whether you seek relaxation, adventure, or simply a place to soak up the sun, the top five beaches in Athens beckon with their beauty and charm, promising memories to last a lifetime. So, pack your sunscreen and prepare to embark on a tour de force of the best beaches in Athens.
