Both the name of the island chain and the name of the biggest island and capital, Lipsi could be mistaken for a town in Germany, if not for its mythological pedigree. This small island off the Dodecanese is said to be Calypso’s Island – the place where Odysseus was stranded and schmoozed by the mysterious nymph. These days, the sleepy village of Chora – the only settlement on the island, hasn’t changed that much. Lipsi flies under the radar, mainly due to its geographical constraints. However, that is a good thing for any discerning traveller intent on discovering one of the few remaining unsullied paradises in the country. From incredible beaches to amazing local treats, this island is life-affirming, so if you want to make the most of your holidays in Greece, we suggest you seriously consider a visit to this gem.
It is Beach Time
Holidays in Greece are all about beaches. It’s been like that since the dawn of Greek tourism in the 1960s, and with the biggest coastline in Europe, it’s not hard to see why. In Lipsi, you’ll get your fill. Start with Platis Gyalos – a secluded stretch of heavenly sand and crystal-clear water, tucked into a cove with plenty of legroom and even more character. You’ll find no amenities there, save for a few tamarisk trees along the coastline, so bring your own supplies.
If you’re after some more foot traffic, the beach of Lientou, 1km from the main town offers just that. It is the most popular beach on the island, meaning its partly organized, and ideal if you’re traveling with family and kids. There are plenty of concession points around, while the water is shallow, and the beach is protected from the wind.

Close to the main settlement and long, Kambos beach hits the spot. Like most Greek beaches, what you’ll find there is a vast expanse of arid rocks and buses to the back, with the lovely golden sand to the front, and a few tamarisks for shade. An esplanade has been created along the coastline, and while the area is not organized, there are rooms to rent adjacent to the beach if you fancy staying seaside.
Activities & Things to Do
Getting on a small wooden boat to get somewhere is an integral part of holidays in Greece. And in Lipsi the opportunity for some adventuring is never far away, especially considering the number of uninhabited islands that surround it. So, take a boat trip and visit Aspronisi, Kalapodia, Franco, Plavi and two dozen more islets in the small archipelago to find your spot under the sun.
Apart from visiting nearby islands, there are some other things worth your time in Lipsi. The village of Lipsi itself is a charming maze of cobblestone alleys and streets lined with Cycladic-style whitewashed houses. Meanwhile, the Aegean Marine Life Sanctuary is a one-of-a-kind vet clinic for marine animals. Take a guided tour and find out more from the marine biologists who rehabilitate, study and research.
When in Lipsi, do as Lipsians would; take a tour of the Lipsi Winery. Passionate winemakers share insights on sustainable practices and unique grape varieties. Indulge in wine tastings, savouring each sip that embodies Lipsi’s beauty and rich heritage.
The Food
Lipsi, for its size, has a robust culinary scene. Its location, on the outskirts of the east-west route, has bequeathed it with a unique palette. In addition, the fertile land has allowed Lipsi to thrive agriculturally on a separate plain. The farmland is plenty, and understandably, meat and cheeses are de rigeur, so while you’re there, get your hands on some lamb chops. In Lipsi you can also sample local cheeses like the spicy touloumotyri, or ricotta-like mizithra.
Other tasty entrants you should seek out are pitaroudia – a type of empanada made with veggies, egg and cheese, as well as favokeftedes – fried yellow pea patties.
To top it off, try a local dessert known as kserotigano which is made from honey, cinnamon and walnuts, and wash it off with the locally produced sweet red wine from the Fokiano variety.
